“Born Again (feat. Doja Cat & RAYE)” — 4/5

“Born Again” is super catchy and reminds me of a song that would be a soundtrack for a summer movie trailer. Normally, I’m not a big fan of rap in the middle of a melodic song, but “Born Again” keeps the balance of the song perfectly. I really loved Doja Cat and RAYE’s parts in this song as well. Overall, I would rate this song four out of five stars, for being a great opening to this album.

“Rockstar” — 3.5/5

Social media hit: if you were online during the summer of 2024, you would have definitely heard this song. While it is a successful song, I don’t think I would listen to “Rockstar” on a regular basis. However, I still love the lyrics, “‘Lisa, can you teach me Japanese?’ I said, “‘はい, はい.’” I would give this song three and a half out of five stars.

“Elastigirl” — 2/5

I’m not a big fan of “Elastigirl” if I have to be honest. It feels too similar to “Rockstar” in both its backing beats and overall vibe. The song also tends to be a bit repetitive and I think it could’ve benefitted from a rap part, which the song lacks. “Elastigirl” would be rated two out of five stars for me.

“Thunder” — 3.5/5

I liked “Thunder” when I first listened to it because of its strong beats and catchy refrain. The lyrics are quite powerful, including “I got that boom, boom so high // When I step in, you gon' see why.” It is a good hype song, and I would rate it three and a half out of five stars.

“New Woman (feat. ROSALÍA)” — 4.5/5

Another internet phenomenon released over summer of 2024: LISA’s album is nothing short of captivating tracks. When I first listened to “New Woman,” I really enjoyed the unique genre of the song apart from LISA’s previous songs. I also loved ROSALÍA’s Spanish verses which flowed smoothly and blended well with the general aesthetic of the song. “New Woman” is probably one of my favorite songs on LISA’s album, and I would rate it four and a half out of five stars.

"FXCK UP THE WORLD (feat. Future)"/“FUTW (Vixi Solo Version)” — 2/5

I’m not qualified person to rate a rap song because that is not typically the genre I listen to. However, I do think that this rap presents LISA’s legendary rapping skills that she often is forgotten of when people post criticizing videos of her online. “FXCK UP THE WORLD” would receive two out of five stars from me, since I don’t enjoy listening to heavy rap genres.

Note: This song was released with both a collaboration with Future and a solo version.

“Rapunzel (feat. Megan Thee Stallion)” — 3/5

This song was a pleasant mix of rap and melodic choruses, and I liked Megan Thee Stallion’s rap part. The “hair down, feeling like Rapunzel” part was a tad repetitive and I think it could have had more variety in lyrics. I would rate this song three out of five stars.

“Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me)” — 4/5

“Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me)” is the perfect daydreaming song for when you just want to put on your headphones and zone out. It has a light beat and melody that I really enjoy listening to, especially in the coming spring season. I would rate this song four out of five stars.

“When I’m With You (feat. Tyla)” — 5/5

I love Tyla’s music, so when I saw the track list on Alter Ego, I was ecstatic to listen to the song. And it didn’t disappoint! Blending Tyla’s summer beat with LISA’s seamless rapping, “When I’m With You” is one of the best songs on this album, in my opinion. I would rate this song a full five out of five stars!

“BADGRRRL” — 2.5/5

At this point, I’ve heard a lot of LISA’s trademark “la-la-la-la” lyrics in her songs—and it didn’t like it did in the songs previous to “BADGRRRL.” I raised the rating up by half a star since the lyrics are quite playful and catchy, but overall, I didn’t really like this song.

“Lifestyle” — 4.5/5

“Lifestyle” combines the best of both worlds of LISA’s music style. It has both an appealing melody as well as a fast-paced beat that keeps the listener engaged throughout the song with its occasional crowd vocals. Overall, I really liked “Lifestyle” and I would rate it four and a half out of five stars.

“Chill” — 5/5

This song highlights LISA’s beautiful voice in this laidback, catchy song. I loved this song the moment I heard its opening with the fast sixteenth note instrumental paired with a spaced out beat. It works perfectly with the minor melodic melody that I really enjoyed. I would rate “Chill” a full five out of five stars!

"Dream" — 5/5

“Dream” is another five stars song for me: I was waiting the entire album for a slower, ballad-like song, and here it is! It is definitely a sentimental song about dreaming of bittersweet moments from the past, pairing nicely with the laidback, jazzy instrumental and beats. “Dream” is the best song to end the album with on a reflective note in its lyrics.

The album also includes solo versions of “FXCK UP THE WORLD” and “Rapunzel” which I didn’t write a review for since the songs are both very similar to the collaboration counterparts.

Conclusion

For me, Alter Ego definitely had some undeniable hits but other tracks that didn’t sit quite right with me. I really loved songs like “When I’m With You” and “Dream” and the overall concept of the album, like its cover. Overall, I would rate this album four out of five stars, balancing out the tracks that I enjoyed and the ones I didn’t.

Happy listening!
