Recently, JENNIE has released her debut album, Ruby, and its seventh track, ExtraL has been on my playlist since the first time I heard it.
Not only does ExtraL have a captivating music video, it features recent Grammy winner Doechii, who's also prominent on my Spotify. Let's talk statistics, music video, and all critics have been saying about this gem of a collab.

The video starts off with JENNIE leading the choreography in an eye-catching blazer with red undergarments, and later on, we see Doechii matching with her. One thing I noticed in JENNIE's dance portion was the stools, sofas, chairs and even ottomans that are scattered around them. One theory I had was maybe- it represented the workplace, especially considering that both Doechii and JENNIE dressed in office-style blazers and pants.
As for the lyrics, it's clear that they're meant to empower women. In one line, JENNIE remarks, "This for my girls with no sponsor, they got they own funding," pushing for women to be independent. They even reference having their own "Benz," or Mercedes Benz, the luxury car brand.
The two artists elaborate on how they live comfortable, filled-with-money lives, all while devoid of a man. Doechii suggests this in her line, "I'm not here for pleasing the men, [I'm] not here to reason with them."
On JENNIE's Youtube channel, ExtraL is the 5th highest ranking in views. As for Ruby, the album got about 29.6 million streams in just its first day, or its debut on March 7th, 2025.

Social Media's Reaction
Similar to many other popular songs, ExtraL has sparked a dance challenge, with many mimicking the choreography displayed in the music video. Songs becoming dances has become increasingly common, especially in a world where TikTok exists. Even Doechii's DENIAL IS A RIVER has been turned into a dance trend.

As for listeners, the official AOTY (Album of the Year) website gives it a 80/100 rating, based on over 700+ ratings from listeners. On the Bias List, a K-pop review site, NICK gives it a 8/10 too, citing that "I would have loved to hear the song’s melodic chorus utilized (and developed) more often in the track."
But although ExtraL boasts a #36 spot on Youtube's Top Music Global and over 33 million views on Youtube, fans have their problems. One listener stated that ExtraL was "the epitome of a generic pop song." Some fans have even suggested that Doechii is what made the song memorable, and JENNIE didn't match her talent.

My Take
Honestly, ExtraL got me hooked on my first listen, and as a pop girlie, I have to admit that's not really a surprise, since the song is a mix of pop and rap. The chorus, I think, could have been a little different instead of repeating continually (it got a little boring!).
JENNIE did great on her part, but it was a smart move to include Doechii, because she really stole the spotlight. Her method of switching up the melody on her verse was new and refreshing while listening to the song. Do I think this song would've flopped if Doechii wasn't on it?
No, that's a little harsh. But part of its success most definitely stems from Doechii's rapping verse.

Here are some of my other ratings:
MV Outfits: 8/10 I loved the buisness theme, but it could've used some more shine and bling (other than JENNIE's teeth)
Artist Feature (Doechii): DEFINITE 10/10. She didn't just dominate the song, but made it memorable with her rap verse, which, I feel, is the crown jewel of ExtraL.
MV CGI: 5/10 I didn't really understand why JENNIE was invisible in a pit of sand, but each to her own.
Wrap Up
Overall, I'd give ExtraL an 8/10. Its fast pacing reminds me of a single, and less of a staple song on JENNIE's Ruby album. Without further ado, feel free to share your thoughts on this collab! I hoped you've enjoyed tuning in on my music madness.
