Breaking Down "Love Hangover" by Jennie and Dominic Fike: a Review

Music & Podcasts

Sat, February 01

Featuring Dominic Fike, "Love Hangover" was released on January 31st. "Love Hangover" is the third single released for Jennie's upcoming album, Ruby, which is going to be released on March 6th.

Just like Jennie's previous songs, I think that "Love Hangover" was a success. It definitely did not disappoint. The music video starred Jennie along with Charles Melton (a Riverdale alum). It was obvious that the video was shot as a comedy, and it is especially noticeable once we delve into its content.

The Music Video

I have watched "ZEN" (music video released January 24th on Youtube) previously and was amazed at the artistic direction the music video followed, so naturally my hopes were up for "Love Hangover."

The music video begins at Jennie's "funeral." Melton is saying a eulogy about his beloved, Jennie, who tragically passed. Jennie is in a blue coffin, looking chic in a blue dress. He recounts a few memories they made together, and this video explores them. After his eulogy, this is when the song begins to start, and where the memories of their dates come rolling in.

The first memory of the couple was at a movie drive-in, where a monster bursts out of the screen and eats a cartoon Jennie. The second was them at a fancy dinner, where Jennie choked on an olive in her glass of wine. The third was when they went bowling, and Jennie slipped on the lane and got shot like a ball.

The last and final memory was at a carnival, where Jennie was holding a balloon and floated up with it. Cartoon Jennie gets struck by lightning in the sky and falls down into the coffin of the present, therefore looping the music video back to the present.

As you can see, there is a common theme with all these memories: Jennie keeps dying! As a result, throughout this video, Melton is constantly trying to rescue Jennie, even performing the Heimlich maneuver and screaming "Jennie!" throughout. The comedic aspect of this is that Jennie keeps coming back to her lover, even though she keeps dying, to "haunt" him.

The music video was very playful and reminded me a little of Sabrina Carpenter's "Taste" music video, as well as Jungkook's "Seven." It reminded me of "Taste" because of the similar meanings behind them ("Taste" was about an ex-girlfriend who does not need to show up to remind the current girlfriend who was there first, but kept popping up anyway) and "Seven" because of the similar settings in the music video ("Seven" started with a fancy dinner, and later Jungkook also had a "funeral" for himself).

I would give a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars to "Love Hangover"'s music video because I love the different scenes that played throughout the video as well as Jennie's outfits that accompanied them. Additionally, I thought that the video matched well with the song, and enhanced the song.

The Song

The song is about a relationship that is on and off. Although the couple hates to continue the relationship (and each other, really), they end up continuing it anyway. Yet, whenever they get back together, they are always bound to leave each other.

The emotions afflicted with this constant leaving and coming back are likened to experiencing a hangover, thus the name of the song. An interesting fact is that the song is apparently inspired by Diana Ross's song, which shares the same title.

Jennie sings most of this song, but Dominic Fike jumps in near the middle with his rap, repeating Jennie's sentiments about not wanting to go back to his lover, but doing so anyway.

Some lyrics that I found particularly catchy were "We say it's over // but I keep messing with your head // And every time I do I end up with this love hangover," which is the chorus of the song. All of Jennie's lyrics were sung in a breathy, almost airy way, unlike her previously released songs.

I'm not sure if I love the song by itself, however. Most of the song is repetitive and more chant-like. If I had to give just the song a rating, I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars.

Conclusion

I love how each of Jennie's previously released songs is unique and different from each other. "Mantra" was a feel-good power anthem, while "ZEN" was bolder and darker. "Love Hangover" was more playful and perfect for the upcoming Valentine's Day.

I would give "Love Hangover" an overall 4 out of 5 stars. Although it was comedic and some lyrics were catchy, I don't think that it was particularly extraordinary. However, I still enjoyed listening to it and watching the music video.

On an exciting note, Jennie has announced shows in three exclusive locations: Los Angeles, New York, and Seoul. Originally just one show in each location, but due to high demand, an extra date was added for the Los Angeles shows. The shows are for Ruby and dubbed "The Ruby Experience." Based on the album cover as well as the physical album contents, it is expected that these shows would be circus-esque, but with Jennie's twist on it!

Overall, songs like "Love Hangover" only drum up more excitement for Jennie's upcoming full-length album. It is exciting to see what other songs and styles would be included in Ruby!
