In the current digital age, it can be difficult to decide to step away from social media and escape the constant cycle of new stimulants. However, this decision can significantly improve your personal well-being and mental health. Here are a few steps you can follow to make the transition away from social media easier.

Step 1: Reflect

Do you remember every post you have seen online? It is safe to assume you have not. The first step in ending your addiction to social media is to reflect because every moment spent scrolling is a moment taken from real-life experiences. The short dopamine boost you receive from social media may seem significant at the moment, but in the grand scheme of things, it is not something that will bring you true happiness.

Step 2: Set Limits

Maybe you’re not ready to give up social media completely—that's okay. Quitting a habit of cold turkey can be extremely difficult. To lead up to the removal of social media apps from your life, you can set daily time limits. The important aspect of this step is to follow your limits strictly. “Only 5 more minutes” of scrolling can turn into 10 to 15 to even more minutes spent scrolling.

Most people turn to social media when they do not have anything else they have to do. When this option is removed, it can lead you to become bored. Instead of reverting to your old habits, you can fill your time with more intellectually fulfilling or creative tasks.

Reading, drawing, or knitting are just a few of the hobbies you can pick up after leaving social media. Having hobbies is proven to benefit you and release dopamine.
