When we think of the 1980s, we usually think of big, crazy hair, leotards, and Marty McFly zooming away in “Back to the Future.” In retrospect, the 1980s is considered an iconic, colorful decade. The fashion, the movies, and the music are remembered fondly to this day. Instead of listening to music on Spotify, teenagers use cassette tapes to listen to music. I was always intrigued by the style and films, but it was the music that captured my attention.

Music is everywhere. We hear it on TV, at the store, or through our own headphones. To function, I must listen to music.

Music is clearly an essential part of our lives. Many of us explore new sounds and artists or recommend songs to friends and family. We usually try to create a playlist that represents our emotions or seek something different to broaden our taste. During the 1980s, music had a diverse range. Genres would evolve during this era, creating different types of music. There were many genres such as synth-pop, disco, dance-pop, glam metal and rock.

The use of synthesizers became very popular, and music videos were evolving into a form of self-expression. MTV would feature different music videos on their station, increasing the popularity of new songs. Famous artists during the 80s included Madonna, The Bangles, Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Bon Jovi, Duran Duran, and Bananarama. I am a huge fan of several artists during that era, but my favorite singer is Madonna. This is no surprise, especially since she is known as “The Queen of Pop.”

Many modern artists have been inspired by the 1980s. For example, synthesizers can be heard in “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd. It is undeniable that music from that era had a significant impact on society, and its legacy continues.

Thanks to my family, I grew up listening to REO Speedwagon and Lionel Richie. When I turn on the radio, I usually hear Toto, Survivor or The Human League. Now on Instagram Reels, I noticed that “Cheri, Cheri Lady” by Modern Talking is gaining popularity. It is obvious that music from the 1980s continues to be very popular. When I was a child and I heard synthesizers for the first time, the unique sounds created a sense of wonder and euphoria. I want to share these feelings so others can experience the beauty of music during that era. Personally, I believe that the 1980s had the best music.

Listening to older music might seem boring or intimidating, which is understandable. Some people might not understand why you would want to listen to music that was created almost forty years ago. However, I would recommend giving it a try.

There are many great songs out there to enjoy. If you are still wary, then do not worry! Here is a list of ten songs from the 1980s that you can begin with. I really love these songs, and I hope that you will too.
