Vivian Wilson Breaks Her Silence: from Coming Out as Trans to Clashing with Elon Musk

Politics

Tue, March 25

Although Vivian Jenna Wilson may not be in the spotlight like her father, she’s still tied to one of the most influential figures of our time–Elon Musk. As the estranged daughter of the Tesla and X (and now Senior Advisor to President Donald Trump), she’s made it unquestionably clear she wishes to distance herself from the “Musk” name.

One question that’s puzzled the media– and even Wilson herself – for years is just how many children Musk actually has. “I will say I do not actually know how many siblings I have, if you include half-siblings. That’s a fun fact,” Wilson retorts in a recent interview with Teen Vogue. While the lives of Musk's other 13 children remain largely out of the limelight, it’s certain that Vivian is not here to stay silent– no matter the cost (hint: Elon Musk’s reputation).

Her refreshingly honest remarks didn’t end there. In the interview, Wilson opens up about topics ranging from coming to terms with her trans identity to being the “Queen of Threads ”(an X competitor).

Vivian Jenna Wilson’s journey has undoubtedly been anything but ordinary, and the media has become fascinated by her latest Teen Vogue interview, where she opened up about some of the most defining moments of her life– moments that the media certainly hadn’t anticipated. From coming out as Trans to dealing with the public rejection from her father and forming her own opinions on politics, Vivian's story is full of raw honesty and upfrontedness. Let’s dive into what she had to say about these major chapters of her life.

Coming Out as Trans

For Vivian, there was one night when everything changed. “It was 11:00 p.m., and I just knew, I’m trans,” she said in her Teen Vogue interview. For months, Vivian stated, she had been struggling in secret– “I was like, I cannot f**king do this anymore,” she admits. She goes on to mention the very real mental toll that puberty was having on her identity.

“I couldn’t get through days. I didn’t want to wake up. I just wanted to rot,” she shared, describing the chaos that resulted from keeping such a large part of her identity hidden from everyone else. Soon realizing that staying in the closet would lead her down a “very destructive path,” Vivian realized it was finally time to let the world know she was trans.

In a bold move, Vivian had come out as trans through an Instagram story (all before telling her mom). “I posted it on my public story [two days] before I told my mom,” Vivian said jokingly, admitting she wished her mom was the first to know. “She deserves to be the first one to know.”

Although the post led to some regret on Wilson’s behalf, the message of the post was powerful yet simple: “I’m trans. She/her pronouns,” her post read. Jokingly, Wilson even added a comment about the popular Hunger Games Series, asking “Are you Team Peeta or are you Team Gale?” under the same post. She did this because, as Vivian says, “ I’ve never not been cringe.”

Wilson’s Complex Stance on Politics

When it comes to issues that impact marginalized communities–especially the trans community–Vivian Wilson is definitely unafraid to speak out. In her Vogue interview, she speaks out about how social media has shaped the way people talk about politics, both for better and for worse. “Social media can be incredibly informative,” Wilson says, then moving on to state that it helped raise awareness about Palestine and Gaza in recent years. She also pointed out the dark side of social media’s impact, specifically how platforms can easily turn individuals against each other and polarize them, using groups like the alt-right as evidence of this.

When asked if she thought we were moving in the right direction politically, Vivian did not sugar coat it. “It’s terrifying,” she said about the attacks on the trans and marginalized community. Vivian describes it as “cartoonishly evil,” obviously frustrated by the current state of our nation’s politics. Vivian’s persona has been marked by a strong online presence, even taking to platforms like Threads and Bluesky to denounce the actions of her father–most notably of Musk’s infamous Nazi salute controversy. Nevertheless, she’s made it clear that she doesn't let her dad, Elon Musk, take up too much space in her life: “I don’t give a f**k about him,” Wilson remarks.

Vivian then goes on to say that she is a leftist, not a Marxist, and stands firmly on issues like free healthcare, universal basic income, and addressing wealth inequality. Wealth inequality is one of the biggest problems of the United States right now,” she said. Vivian points out, though, that her identity as a trans woman undoubtedly shapes her politics, saying, “If you are trans and conservative, you are voting against your own interests.” Despite all of her beliefs, she acknowledges that her political views are always changing: “I’m never going to be conservative, obviously, but I feel like everyone's politics change.”

Musk’s Denouncement of Her Trans Identity

Wilson has made it very clear that she is not here for her billionaire father Elon Musk’s hurtful comments about her gender identity. In a recent interview, Musk claimed that he was “tricked” into supporting her gender affirming care at the age of 16, even saying that she had been “killed” by the “woke mind virus.” Following his online statement, Vivian, too, took to social media to clap back.

She quickly shut down her father’s narrative about her own identity, calling it “entirely fake” and pointing out that he doesn't know her at all. Vivian then revealed that in earlier years, her father "relentlessly harassed" her for being feminine and queer. Vivian’s bold response shows that she isn’t letting anyone–even her own father–define who she is. Wilson is–and has been— ready to stand up for herself and the trans community, standing up against the harmful stereotypes that plague them.

Final Thoughts

From boldly embracing her trans identity to calling out injustice (even when it means taking on one of the most powerful men in the world), Vivian Wilson has continually proved to the media that she won’t be silenced. In a world obsessed with labeling celebrities and dissecting their every move, she’s making it clear that she defines herself. Whether you love or hate her, one thing is certain: She’ll keep clapping back on Threads, Bluesky, and whatever social media platform is trending next.
