Top 4 Best TV Shows of All Time to Add to Your Binge List

TV & Film

August 15, 2024

With the vast options of TV shows out there to watch on the numerous streaming platforms, there are always a few that stand out the most. Personally, four shows have stuck with me out of all the ones I've watched. The list I'm about to share is in no particular order...

1 - Succession - HBOMax

Succession is one of the best to ever do it. This is on par with shows like “The Sopranos” as possibly the greatest ever. This Emmy-Award Winning show has the sharpest writing out of all the ones listed below.

The dialogue is nothing sort of unique and because of that, stands on its own, giving each character their personalities and flaws. But mostly, they are relatable. Everything here works - writing, direction, acting, production values, humor, etc. And the musical score.... chef's kiss! Succession tells the story of the wealthy Roy family as they fight for the future of their father's company after his health begins to decay and has to step out of the spotlight. It may also have the most stacked cast out of any show...with names such as Brian Cox, Hiram Abbass, Kieran Culkin, Peter Friedman, Matthew Macfayden, Sarah Snook, and Jeremy Strong.

2 - Stranger Things - Netflix

The first Netflix show I ever watched. This one is what took Netflix to unprecedented levels back in 2016 when Season 1 premiered and made the platform the monster it is today. It's a mix of Goonies and E.T., set in the 1980s.

Stranger Things tells the story of a young boy who vanishes in a small town and this uncovers a supernatural mystery that shocks the entire town. Strong performances from the cast all around, brilliant score, terrific storytelling, nostalgic settings, mind-blowing visual effects, and the big one... the direction. The Duffer Brothers, who created the series, also directed most episodes and that's what elevates this show. These two guys are brilliant. Their craft is truly unprecedented here. I can't wait for Season 5 next year, which is supposed to be the last. If The Duffer Brothers stick the landing, Stranger Things will go down in history as an all-time great for the genre and TV shows in general.

3 - Breaking Bad - Netflix

Many consider this one to be the greatest show of all time. I partially agree. Breaking Bad tells the story of a chemistry teacher diagnosed with terminal cancer who begins manufacturing and selling meth to secure his family's future.

The iconic performances of Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul as Walter White and Jesse Pinkman are possibly two of the greatest performances in TV history. But what this show also does that's amazing is its cinematography. Every shot in this magnificent series tells a story. But none of this could've happened without the scripts, which are by far the best screenplays in any television series ever, in my opinion. In just a few short episodes, you care for the characters and feel for their sense of danger. And because the script is so great, the execution of the story and characters is terrific. Every episode has a plot twist and hits you in ways you would never imagine. You know you got your story executed right when you get emotional about a villain’s death or when he/she suffer.

4 - Game of Thrones - HBOMax

This one may be my favorite on this list. Game of Thrones is the pinnacle of what a great TV show should always be. Gripping characters, emotional storytelling, strong performances, jaw-dropping visuals, an all-time great musical score, terrific production design and sets, and direction.

The word “masterpiece” wouldn't even give this show justice, that's just how great it is. However, the last two seasons, Seasons 7 & 8, were terrible. So, in my opinion, Game of Thrones ended with Season 6. But even then, there's no denying that for eight consecutive years, Game of Thrones hooked millions of viewers to the screens every Sunday night when a new episode would air, making it the most popular and most-watched series of the 2010s by a mile. Many iconic characters such as Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Ned Stark, Sansa Stark, etc, became household names quickly, once again going to show the power of good storytelling. Game of Thrones delves into the story of the noble families of the fictional Seven Kingdoms of Westeros fighting for the Iron Throne, and the obstacles along the way.

These are the four shows that impacted me the most when I first came to watch them. As I stated above, good storytelling never fails to capture the audience's imagination. From the visuals to the plot twists, to the performances, to the settings, or even to the direction itself..it makes the audience believe.

That's what I have always believed in as I love to write and want to become a screenwriter. Storytelling is always king. If you're interested in any of these shows, I hope you find them as captivating as I did. Happy watching!
