Meet Kayla Bohan

Kayla Bohan has done what many kids dream of before she even reached high school: become a movie star. She has been acting since she was 7. She starred in the feature film KAYLA alongside Joe Estevez and Kyle Devero who are two critically acclaimed American actors.

Her work in KAYLA led to her winning the Best Leading Actress award at the WRPN Women's International Film Festival, the Best American Actress award at the NVIFF Public Choice Awards, and multiple Best Child Actress awards at various film festivals.

Kayla starred in her second feature film, Harper, when she was 11 years old, which was submitted for consideration at the 94th Academy Awards. For her outstanding performance in Harper, Kayla won the Rising Star-Best Actress Award at the 55th Houston International Film Festival in 2022.

She now has the lead role in an upcoming film From Embers where she will appear alongside Tony and Emmy nominated actor Matthew Morrison who was a star from the TV series Glee. The Teen Magazine is thrilled to have gotten the chance to interview Kayla about her upcoming film From Embers which releases on October 25, 2024.

Acting

Kayla has been acting ever since she was seven. She has always been passionate about what she does. Her experiences in acting and the people she has met along the way have impacted her skills in the acting world.

“Ever since I was young, music and performance have always been with me,” Kayla says. “I feel like I was given a gift, and it's been a very special journey discovering it. Working with great people like Matthew Morrison, Joe Estevez, and Kyle Deverohas taught me so much. I feel like every role helps me grow. I’m also grateful for the awards I’ve won. I feel like they motivate me to keep pushing myself.”

Like many other child actors, Kayla has to go to school and receive an education while balancing her acting career alongside it.

“Balancing school with acting has been challenging, for sure,” she said. “But the rewards are worth it. There’s nothing better than connecting with people through my work.”

Kayla however views her career as fun and enjoys it very much. She does not find it hard to do what she does because of the joy she finds in it.

“I don’t really think about it as hard work since I love what I do so much,” said Kayla. “I think when you’re passionate about something, it makes everything flow naturally. It makes it fun!”

From Embers

Kayla’s film From Embers will center around a woman named Lily (Kara Wang) with an autistic son who is widowed after her husband mysteriously dies in a fire. Kayla will play Chloe Baker who is the neighbor to Lily and her son.

In her film From Embers Kayla wrote two songs and acted in the film. Talk about a double threat! When we asked about how she managed to pull this off with such grace and poise, she shared, “I tried to put myself in Chloe’s shoes, imagining how she would feel about her father, who was played by Matthew Morrison in this film,” Kayla said. “That really helped me balance both acting and writing songs for the film.”

From Embers is a very personal project for Kayla. All the songs she composed for the film connected to the film’s themes.

“’Panorama’ was inspired by Chloe’s feelings for her father, while ‘Maybe This Is How Life Should Be’ was a gift I originally wrote for my mom,” said Kayla. “Both songs connect deeply to the film’s themes of love and family, so I feel they work perfectly.”

Future of Kayla’s Career

Kayla believes that she could not have gotten as far as she has in her acting career alone. She has had much help along the way.

“Matthew Morrison has been an incredible mentor,” she said.“He’s patient and gave me great advice, making me feel comfortable both in front of the camera and in the studio. And also, my mom, of course!”

Even though From Embers has finished shooting and is about to be released, Kayla has no plans to stop acting. She has even more goals in the industry, and hopes to star in more films and win even more awards.

“I’d love to star in a comedy one day and continue exploring roles that challenge me,” said Kayla. “I just want to keep growing as an artist. And I’d also particularly love to be cast in a teenage movie.”

Kayla is happy to be acting. She also hopes many others will join her in the film industry. When prompted, she had the following advice for the world:

“I’d say follow your passion and work hard,” advises Kayla.“When you love what you do, everything else falls into place.”
