In Or Out? Our Take on Fashion's Controversial 'Lingerie as Outerwear'

Fashion

It's fair to say the fashion world is no stranger to controversial trends, and 2025's 'lingerie as outerwear' definitely isn't an exception. As the tag suggests, this means incorporating lingerie into our day-to-day outfits - pretty bold to say the least. The style is set to appear on Spring and Summer runways, and has even been backed by big names including Beyoncé and Syndey Sweeney.

Although first emerging in the 1980s, this trend is making huge waves this year as modesty continues taking a back seat in all that is à la mode. In saying that, however, visibly wearing lingerie hasn’t been welcomed by everyone. There’s controversy in the clothing world, and once again we’re here for it.

There’s no doubt that at first glance, lingerie as outerwear sounds pretty daring. Although it wouldn’t be the first time fashion pushes figurative boundaries, some feel we’ve taken a step too far. Attention-seeking, inappropriate, and even vulgar are all terms on the lips of disapproving critics.

Their harsh rejection presents a strong argument: wearing lingerie in the outside world signals an erosion of our private lives. Not only that, but we've thrust opened the door for femininity to once again be objectified - a regressive move, to put it mildly. Perhaps a public display of undergarments would stand purely as an imaginative and cutting-edge fashion statement in an ideal world. Unfortunately, a fashion utopia is yet to exist.

It's evident that opinions are resolutely divided, so here's my take on what 'lingerie as outerwear' actually has to offer:

Functionality

To start with, cold weather immediately obliterates any ideas of lingerie for going out and about. Depending on climate, its minimal insulation potentially limits us to only half the year, if that. Of course a jacket or sweater could accessorise, but this detracts from the entire look as lingerie would be hidden away.

The lack of year-round flexibility here admittedly takes away from its multi-purpose reputation as the fabrics simply won't shield from even the slightest of wind and cold. From a practical point of view, shivering and chic will never go hand in hand.

Versatility

Despite initial preconceptions, wearing lingerie to go out can give quite a classy impression, especially if styled in a subtle and well thought out way. Brands have in fact begun blurring the lines with their lingerie designs, making them more accessible and mainstream for buyers. It's become increasingly difficult to differentiate pieces that are lingerie with ones actually intended for everyday outerwear. This adds to the trend's versatility in terms of when and where lingerie would prove a suitable choice.

Much lingerie also comes in muted colours like white, navy and black which further boosts adaptability. These shades can be matched with each other for a professional feel, or just as easily paired with vivid tones for fun and vibrance. In other words, say hello to a diverse range of looks for various occasions.

Affordability

Although lingerie is more often than not expensive, mainly because of high-quality materials like silk and lace, there are still brands offering wallet-friendly alternatives. Mainstream labels such as H&M and Zara, for example, provide options that are more affordable to consumers.

Even with a modest price point, the question remains as to whether we're willing to alter buying habits to invest in these types of pieces. It's tempting to continue spending on what we know to love and wear often. So despite affordability, are we as young people behind 'lingerie as outerwear' enough to forgo our usual fashion choices?

Sustainability

This factor is high on the fashion priority list and in itself is much more than a trend. It now plays a huge role in what is made and what we buy, with lower pollution and waste at the heart. Here, the 'lingerie as outerwear' trend hits the brief. Re-styling what you already own is a win-win - less fast fashion consumption and more money saved.

To top it off, lingerie itself is made of minimal material, which may lower any environmental impact. We've seen a steady and healthy emergence of sustainable lingerie brands, such as Pact and and Subset, who both share a strong focus on responsible and ethical production. It's important to note, however, that many other lingerie products still consist of synthetics; the main culprits include polyester, acrylic, and nylon - none of which biodegrade.

So, In or Out?

I'm in. Although there are some drawbacks of 'lingerie as outerwear', we've still seen many reasons driving the trend's ever-growing popularity. Possibly the most significant of these is its role in reinforcing freedom of expression, self-love and body confidence - a message that clearly resonates with the body positivity movement. Often, fashion holds a deeper meaning and influence on society than what is just seen on the surface and 'lingerie as outerwear' is a powerful example of that.

So, are you in or out?
