How to Dress Your Best for Friday Night Lights

Fashion

September 26, 2024

Football season marks the beginning of an exciting school year, since entire student bodies (or the majority of them) come together to cheer on their teams. One of the key aspects of high school football is the themes, which range from simple to creative. There are the typical pink-out and neon themes, and there are even others such as Hollywood and minions (true story - check TikTok).

However, how do you stand out in the crowd during these games? Follow this guide to dress your best for Friday night lights.

Neon

Neon can be interpreted in many different ways. There are the bright pink and yellow Align tanks and Hotty-Hot shorts from Lululemon, and there is usually at least one orange construction vest. You can make your outfit more unique by adding a neon mini skirt (there are tons of cute options with ruffles). You can also accessorize the outfit with neon headbands, shoes, and even earrings.

Amazon has a ton of options, as does Lululemon. For accessories, check Amazon or revisit a childhood favorite, Claire's.

Camo

Camo has become a trendy football theme over the past few years. It has literally been interpreted with hunting jackets and forest-printed shirts. On the other hand, there are plenty of camo-print cargo skirts or green T-shirts with a faded camouflage print. If none of these options sound appealing, you can always go for dark green or brown instead.

Another way to approach this theme is by wearing black camo. Lululemon offers plenty of black camo athleisure, such as leggings, Scubas, Define jackets, or workout shirts. These pieces will fit the theme, keep you warm, and look stylish.

You can find good camo cargo skirts on Edikted, Amazon, or Princess Polly. For tops and jackets, try Amazon and Fashion Nova (there’s also a nice toned-down option at Francesca's).

White Out

White out is a classic student section theme. There are many ways to look good at a white out, whether you wear a white shirt and blue denim bottoms, an all-white outfit, or even paint stripes on your face with white paint (yes, the bottle does get passed around the student section). These games tend to be packed, so if you're going to dress up for any game, make sure it's the white out.

Lululemon and Athleta both offer great options for all-white athleisure outfits. If you want to step it up with a white skirt, Princess Polly has great denim options, while Amazon offers great cargo skirts. For tops, Edikted has plenty of white tube tops, but you could also run to TJ Maxx or Marshalls for a simple white tee.

Beach

Typically occurring at the beginning of the season (when the weather is still warm), beach is a fun theme to have. Beach balls are usually tossed around above the student section, and you'll see tons of pastels and bright colors incorporated into outfits. Pro tip: avoid wearing a bathing suit or bikini top with shorts—it's still an on-campus school event.

Instead of a literal beach interpretation, there are plenty of ways to fit the theme with a cute outfit. You could wear a tank top and denim shorts (which often double as a beach cover-up or a night-out look) or, if it’s a bit cooler, opt for a T-shirt or sweatshirt with a beach name on it. You can even accessorize with a plastic lei and/or sunglasses.

Another thing to consider is footwear. While flip-flops and Birkenstocks seem like an obvious choice, you risk losing them in the rowdy student section. If you choose this route, make sure to wear shoes that are easily replaceable in case they get damaged or lost.

You can find good tank tops at Nordstrom, Garage, or pretty much anywhere during the summer months. American Eagle has great denim short options. For plastic leis, check Amazon, Party City, or Walmart.

USA

It’s time to show your patriotism with the USA theme. Student sections often turn into a sea of red, white, and blue, and an American flag always seems to make an appearance in the crowd. For this theme, bring out your red, white, and blue items and combine them to create your outfit for the game.

If you can find shirts with stars or stripes, even better. To accessorize, you can invest in star-themed jewelry to complement your patriotic colors. Good places to find these jewelry items include Francesca's and Amazon.

Another way to interpret the USA theme is by wearing shirts that say "USA" or feature the American flag. Ralph Lauren flag sweaters and T-shirts are great examples of this style. For bottoms, denim skirts, shorts, or pants are perfect options. Not only does denim count as "blue," but it’s also a major staple of American fashion.

You can find patriotic tops almost anywhere, as these colors are a wardrobe staple. I recommend PacSun and Brandy Melville for cute baby tees or tanks with small American flag details (so they can be worn year-round). For denim bottoms, American Eagle is a great stop, or you can head to Levi’s for quality jeans. You can also find red, white, and blue bottoms on Amazon.
