How to Find Your Unique Writing Spark and Your Own Writer's Voice

Tue, March 25

It is the same advice that we have heard continuously; write everyday, work on your grammar and your writing will improve. But does it always work? The truth is, not always. Writing is beyond a systematic and rigid process.

Your writing voice is like your speaking voice—unique. Finding your voice within is not about forcing words on paper but giving it a listening ear to hear it.

How Can You Find Your Unique Spark of Writing?

Reading twenty books or keeping a journal, won't be the advice I would give you. Rather, do nothing. Nothing.

The reason is, we make internal thoughts and comments without even knowing. The tone of those thoughts are the whisper of your writing voice. It is not your distinct writing voice but we are getting there.

What to Do With Our Thoughts?

There will be those days that your voice might be sarcastic, poetic, loud, or jovial. Other days, it might be sharp, reflective, or even inconsistent. For now, drop the pens down.

We need to notice them before we can use them. It means being aware that the voice(s) are more than just an unbearable echo.

How Do You Recognize Your Own Voice?

As you continue to be aware of your writing voice, you should have noticed a bit of consistency. Maybe your voice is poetic than sarcastic, or it is more loud than reflective. All I know is that you might have noticed a particular tone. You might not be able to put a label on it but you know it exists—embodying a significant part of you.

How Do You Implement Your Voice in Writing?

You want me to say, write. You can get your writing materials ready but—yes, there is a but—ask yourself; am I mirroring a particular voice that isn't mine? Or is this the voice that I find similar to a character from a book I read recently? One of the reasons I did not recommend reading, is that our minds can easily lean on to the voices used or portrayed in a book.

If you are stuck, just try to keep a safe distance from external forces (books) threatening your writing voice. Then, try again but be intentional about it.

If you are not stuck, lift the pen and scribble away. Are you satisfied with what you are writing? Does it feel like you? Answer those questions.

Your writing voice is not lost but it exists within. It is waiting for you to turn off the noise and listen. Listen to the whisper of your voice.

And if she’s not reading, she’s lost in thought, chasing the perfect twist—the moment a story stops being just a story and becomes something unforgettable.
