Being a global citizen is defined as being someone who is aware of and understands the wider world and their place in it. But what does it actually mean?
Well, as a global citizen, you should understand how every singular and seemingly isolated action by individuals and countries fits into the larger interconnected web of the world. Nothing exists in a vacuum and everything has broader consequences.

Of course, this constitutes being aware of the news and global issues. But it also involves developing your own perspectives on them, even if it feels challenging to think critically at first. (Note: base your perspectives on knowledge, accurate information and well-rounded research into different viewpoints)
It is only when you cultivate this awareness of the world that you can begin to advocate for your beliefs and promote a lifestyle rooted in values that reflect your commitment to the world as a whole. That is what I think being a global citizen really means!

Why It Is Important, Especially Now
Now, you may already be aware of global events, and that alone shows why, now more than ever, the world needs young voices to be heard. But these voices only rise if we create them.
In today’s world, being a global citizen is no longer optional, it is our responsibility.

With global warming reaching record highs, the democracy backsliding in many parts of the world, and the rise of the right-wing ideologies, we must be aware and understand the consequences of all these developments. Only then would you be in a position to advocate for meaningful change—because we of course do not want arguments based off of misinformation.
How to Become a Global Citizen.
1. Information!
If this wasn’t obvious yet—you start with reading the news. Every single day. Or watch it.
Now, I know that it isn’t always possible, even for me, despite being a politics student. But consider how you may be able to incorporate the news into your daily routine.

Is it possible for you to listen to a little podcast episode of the NYT Daily on your commute? Or sign up for newsletters that brief you, which you can read during breakfast? Access newspapers and articles for more detail? Maybe follow some informative accounts on Instagram to make doomscrolling a little productive?
2. Synthesis
While these are things to consider to get the information, you also need to form opinions and think critically about it all. For this, you may start reading the opinion columns or listen to news analyses by experts. This is really for you to comprehend everything you find out and make sense of it, almost like piecing together a puzzle! (And yes, this is also where you may notice historical references—because history really does repeat itself. A lot these days…)
3. Discuss!
Now, with all this information and opinions you have—talk to people. Your friends, family, teachers. Listen to their perspectives. Understand why they are the same or different to yours, why you would agree or disagree with them.

Be an active listener and participate in the political conversations (even when it gets awkward at the family dinners). This engagement will make you more curious and invested!

While travelling allows you to take pretty pictures and see gorgeous views, take it a step further. Visit museums, talk to locals—make it a truly enriching cultural experience. It can be more than just seeing new places, it can be about connecting with a new and more diverse set of people, learning their perspectives and becoming culturally aware. This helps us truly build empathy and compassion that becomes a key to becoming a global citizen; because once you become aware of things in the world, it is the balance between emotions and logic that truly help you become more conscientious.
Additionally, volunteering with organisations around you that address issues that you truly care about can be a transformational experience. It can give you hands-on exposure to global issues and help drive change and truly advocate through the right channels that help you make impact.
Conclusion
I hope you take charge and embrace your roles as a socially responsible global citizen. And if you need a little extra push—just remember: the real reward of being a global citizen is knowing that, in some way, you leave the world better than you found it.
